ABR™ Rider & Rear Bag Selection Guide
Choosing the right lower rider and rear shooting bag helps you get the best performance from your Adjustable Bag Rider.
Your ideal setup depends on the lower rider you select—V, ELR, or SQR—along with your shooting application, desired bag height, and the type of rear support you prefer.
Use this guide to compare ABR rider profiles, determine the proper rear bag ear spacing, and choose a shooting bag that provides stable support while maintaining easy access to the ABR adjustment wheel.
1
Which Lower Rider Should I Choose?
-

V Rider
Best for standard two-stitch rear bags
Fits a standard two-stitch bag
Approximately 3/8" ear spacing
V-shaped lower profile
Good choice if you already use a compatible traditional rear bag
Best if: You want to use your ABR with a standard two-stitch shooting bag.
-

ELR Rider
Wider platform for greater rear support
.850" wide
.5" tall
Approximately 5/8" optimum ear spacing
Works well with ELR-style bag ears
Wider footprint works well with softer rear bags
Best if: You want a wider contact surface or shoot ELR/long-range configurations.
-

SQR Rider
Designed around stock lower-rail bag dimensions
.850" wide
.825" tall
Approximately 5/8" optimum ear spacing
Similar width to the ELR rider with a taller profile
Best if: Your existing bag currently fits your rifle's stock lower rail.

Already Have A Rear Bag?
Your Existing Rear Bag May Work.
You don't necessarily need a new shooting bag to use an Adjustable Bag Rider.
Rear bags with bunny ears or ELR ears are generally preferred because the lower ears allow access to the ABR thumb wheel. Other bags and even sand socks can work, although Long Shot Precision recommends a bag with ears for the best interface with the rider.
Round Back ABR Protektor Model Bag (tall version).
For the best fit:
V Rider → approximately 3/8" ear spacing
ELR Rider → approximately 5/8" ear spacing
SQR Rider → approximately 5/8" ear spacing
The fit should be snug. Excessive space between a heavy leather bag's ears and the rider can negatively affect tracking and create horizontal groups.
3
How To Measure Your Rear Bag
Get Your ABR™ First
Long Shot Precision recommends selecting and installing your Adjustable Bag Rider before ordering a fitted rear bag.
Install your ABR.
Extend the ABR approximately halfway or farther.
Measure the required height underneath the ABR.
Determine which rider profile you have: V, ELR, or SQR.
Use those measurements when selecting your rear bag.
For a custom Protektor Model bag, provide the ABR configuration and required height when ordering.

Rear Bag Features That Matter
What Should You Look for in an ABR Rear Bag?
Low, Short Ears
Help maintain access to the ABR adjustment wheel.
Correct Ear Spacing
The rider should fit snugly between the ears for consistent tracking.
Proper Height
Choose the lowest practical bag that works with your shooting setup.
Stable Base
A stable footprint helps minimize unwanted movement.
Appropriate Surface
The bag needs to support the rifle while allowing the rider to move consistently during adjustment and recoil.
Long Shot Precision specifically recommends using the smallest, lightest bag practical for your setup, because a smaller bag can be easier to reposition in small increments to bring the reticle back into alignment.

Rear Bags Designed to Work with the ABR™.
Instead of forcing shooters to adapt another bag, Long Shot Precision offers rear shooting bags designed specifically around Adjustable Bag Rider use.
Long Shot Precision has created a bag that can be used on any surface. Designed for the Military / Hunting / PRS. It has a side that grips (bottom) and a side that allows smooth consistent sliding of the ABR rider. The height of the small bag when settled is about 2.25” and it will not interfere with finger access to the thumb wheel. The bag can be stood on the end to provide about 3”. A thick nylon loop is provided. Dimension 3.5” x 3.5” Made in the USA.
Options :
Small - Lite Weight Fill - about 13 oz
Compact Support for Hunting, PRS & Field Shooting
The Small Bag provides approximately 2.25" of settled height. One surface is designed to grip while the opposite side allows the ABR rider to slide smoothly and consistently.
At approximately 3.5" × 3.5" and about 13 oz. with lightweight fill, it's a compact option designed for Military, Hunting and PRS applications. It can also be stood on end to provide approximately 3" of height.
Long Shot Precision has created a bag that can be used on any surface. Designed for the ELR / Military / Hunting / PRS.
The Large bag is designed to provide move stability and also adjustability due to a fill port on the side -which allows the user to change the fill level for their needs. To reduce any roll during recoil the bottom is flat (it’s mail box shaped). It also has a lower felt side for gripping and a cordura side that provides smooth consistent sliding of the rider.
Dimension 3.5”H 4”W x 6”L. Made in the USA.
Large - 2 lbs (lite weight fill)
This bag was designed collaboratively with Extreme and Ultra Long Range shooters with heavy rifles that need more support than the LSP Small bag.
More Support for Heavy & ELR Rifles
The Large Bag was developed with Extreme and Ultra Long Range shooters who needed additional support for heavier rifles.
Its flat bottom helps reduce rolling during recoil, while an adjustable fill port allows the shooter to customize the amount of fill. A felt surface provides grip while the Cordura side allows the rider to slide smoothly.
Approximately 3.5"H × 4"W × 6"L and 2 lbs. with lightweight fill.

Rear Bag & Rider FAQ
-
What's the difference between the V and ELR rider?
The V Rider features a V-shaped bottom designed to work with a standard two-stitch rear shooting bag and approximately 3/8" ear spacing.
The ELR Rider has a wider, flat bottom measuring approximately .850" wide by .5" tall and works best with approximately 5/8" ear spacing. Its wider footprint provides additional contact with the rear bag and is a popular choice for long-range and ELR shooting setups.
-
Which rear bag should I use with an Adjustable Bag Rider?
The best rear shooting bag depends on your ABR lower rider, required shooting height, rifle setup, and intended use. The bag should provide stable support while allowing the Adjustable Bag Rider to move consistently and keeping the adjustment thumb wheel accessible.
For the best fit, match the bag's ear spacing to your rider and choose the lowest practical bag height for your shooting position. Long Shot Precision also offers Small and Large rear bags designed specifically for use with the ABR.
-
Can I use my existing rear shooting bag with an ABR?
Yes. Many existing rear shooting bags can be used with an Adjustable Bag Rider as long as the rider fits properly between the bag ears and the bag provides enough clearance to access the adjustment wheel.
Check your bag's ear spacing and height against the dimensions of your selected V, ELR, or SQR rider before purchasing a new bag.
-
What ear spacing do I need for an ABR?
Recommended ear spacing depends on your lower rider:
V Rider: approximately 3/8"
ELR Rider: approximately 5/8"
SQR Rider: approximately 5/8"
A snug fit between the rider and bag ears is important. Excessive side-to-side space, particularly with a firm leather rear bag, can affect consistent tracking.
-
Do I need a bag with bunny ears?
No, but bunny ears or lower ELR-style ears are recommended for many Adjustable Bag Rider setups because their lower profile provides easier access to the ABR adjustment thumb wheel.
The most important considerations are proper rider fit, stability, correct height, and maintaining access to the adjustment mechanism.
-
Can I use a squeeze bag or sand sock with an ABR?
Yes. An Adjustable Bag Rider can be used with different styles of rear support, including some squeeze bags and sand socks.
However, a properly fitted rear shooting bag with ears generally provides a more defined interface for the rider and can improve stability and consistent tracking. If precision and repeatability are your priorities, choose a bag designed or fitted specifically for your ABR configuration.
-
Should I buy my ABR or rear bag first?
Choose and install your Adjustable Bag Rider first.
Once the ABR is installed, extend it approximately halfway or farther to the height you expect to use. Measure from the shooting surface to the bottom of the rider. You can then use that measurement, along with your V, ELR, or SQR rider type, to select the appropriate rear bag and height.
This is especially important when ordering a fitted or custom rear shooting bag.

What's the difference between the LSP Small and Large Bag?
The LSP Small Bag is a compact, lightweight option designed for portability and versatility. It provides approximately 2.25" of settled height and can also be stood on end for approximately 3" of height. Its smaller size makes it well suited for hunting, PRS, field shooting, and shooters who want a lightweight rear support.
The LSP Large Bag provides a larger, more stable footprint and was developed with Extreme and Ultra Long Range shooters and heavier rifles in mind. Its flat bottom helps reduce rolling during recoil, while an adjustable fill port allows the shooter to customize the amount of fill.
Both bags feature surfaces designed to provide grip on one side and smoother ABR movement on the other.
-
Which rear bag is best for ELR shooting?
For Extreme Long Range shooting, look for a rear bag that provides a stable base, proper rider fit, sufficient support for a heavier rifle, and clear access to the ABR adjustment wheel.
The LSP Large Bag was developed specifically with Extreme and Ultra Long Range shooters in mind and provides a larger footprint for heavier rifle setups.
Traditional ELR-style rear bags can also work well. When using an ELR Rider, approximately 5/8" ear spacing is recommended. Ultimately, the best bag will depend on your rifle's weight, required shooting height, rider configuration, and shooting position.
